One of my greatest achivement in my career was being part of the research team leading to the birth of my first research publication entitled “People of The Forest: The Penan”.
It was a collaboration between my university and Sarawak State Library (locally known as Pustaka Negeri) as part of the government effort to document the multi-diversity of unique Sarawak culture and tradition under the Sarawakiana series. Apart from putting everything in hardcopy (the conventional way), taking the advantage of modern technology, it is also made available in digital media form where one get to see inter-active videos. I hope the book provide a clearer picture and better understanding on the most controversial tribe in Malaysia.
I wish I can provide a thorough findings on the Penan but due to time constraints (only 6 months are given), it is the best result that the team can achieve so far. I strongly believe we can explore more than this and I am openly looking forward to associate with any individual/organisation to further study on the Penan.
I have a fond memories of the Penan (especially Long Lewe/Beku’s Penan) as I get to know them during my primary studies at a mission school. I find it as a gesture of my appreciation toward them therefore the focus of the research are mostly on the Penan at Baram area. They openly admitted that they are willing to open up to the team simply because of me. I felt honored for that, really.
To achieve success, one bound to go through ups and downs. Same goes here. Frankly, I’ve been through un-necessary dramas when the research heading toward compilation (I’m not recognised as an author). I have to accept the fact that I was taken for granted. Of course, I felt frustrated and cheated. Worst feeling is when I felt that I’ve betrayed the Penans that I fondly close with.
Nevertheless, I’ve learnt a bitter lesson the hard way and I have to move on. The other side of me constantly reminding and motivating me in silence “It’s good that you gone through this. It made you become stronger yet wiser. Never give up woman coz opportunity is ahead of you!”. So, thank you to the experience and I’m so looking forward for another research publication in the near future.
On the other hand, the book is currently on sale at Pustaka Negeri for RM30.
