RWMF:Do You Know What’s Going On From Behind?

In most cases, we tend to make our own judgment, assumption and conclusion based on what (be it printed information or verbal information) is given to us but rarely we get to see or get to know the information on what was the actual reason/cause that contribute to the case.

astro is the rwmf exclusive media partner

For this, I’m sharing with my gentle readers on some ‘behind the scene’ cases on what the MGK9 part-timer team encountered (I wish to reveal all of it but due to future security reason on few parties, I have to keep it to myself instead – a courtesy of respect) throughout the Rainforest World Music Festival.

Do you know that Santubong Resort Hotel has been the official accommodation for the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) for the last few years?

It has been the temporary home for the rainforest performers group, media representatives, and tourist from around the globe but also to the locals ever since the rainforest music festival was held. The hotel is surrounding by the greens of the Damai Golf and Country Club (an 18 hole, par 72 course). The famous Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV) is situated just 5 mins away from the resort.

But what interest me the most is this… *giggled*

are you sure it's an exercise room or something else ;p

Do you also know that apart from being the official accommodation for the RWMF, Santubong Resort Hotel is also the drop off point for the public before entering SCV?

cars parked along the roadside towards santubong resort hotel

Public that wishes to drive on their own vehicles will have to leave their cars here and hopped into the van shuttle (RM5 per way) before proceeding to SCV. The public too can hop on a bus shuttle from few designated pick up points at the Cat City (RM10 per way) before proceeding straight to the SCV.

bus shuttle parked along the road on standby mode to shuttle the public back to the city

But what makes me giggled to myself is when an old Caucasian lady (probably in her mid-50s) accusing Malaysian is ‘stealing’ her money. The reason being is those who hop on the bus/van shuttle from the city/Santubong Resort Hotel will be drop off right in front of SCV main entrance (which is approximately 0.5km to the) and they have to walked down a hill (walking up the hill again on the way back) before reaching the SCV. She wasn’t satisfied with that sort of services and it doesn’t worth her RM10.

She think that they should be dropping off right in front of the SCV’s entrance instead.

Do you know why the public have to go through security check at the SCV entrance?

scv's main entrance towards sunset

To enter the SCV entrance, one have to produce their tickets to the STB’s volunteer and a tag will be given and usually this will be tied to your wrist. These tags come in 3 different colors’ for respective days. No tag on the wrist means you are digging your own ‘grave’ and you’ll be busted by us (the security team). In other word, you ‘smuggled’ yourself for free and that is not fair for others who had paid.

we caught 6 person without wrist tag and they were confined and placed at the main entrance

After going through the wrist tagging, you’ll have to undergo a body checkup where we (the security team) uses a metal scanner that takes approximately less than 2 minutes. The reason being behind this body checkup is to ensure the public brings no sharp instruments/weapons (the truth is – it was more than that) that can be mis-used by the crowd (the least we can do is to minimize any potential bigger consequences).

waiting in the queue for body scan

arms up sir, let me scan you huhuhu...

Those who came in with bags/baby stroller/luggage, they will need to get their stuff checked by us. This is where you’ll get to see us ‘digging’ the contents in their bags. I’ve been doing this for the last 2 years and I’m surprised and sad at the same time to see the public still bringing in outside food and drink although they have been reminded prior to the festival (no outside food and drink is allowed was clearly stated in the ticket, it was announced during the press conference and even printed on the signage board placed exactly at SCV’ entrance). 🙁

miss, can i checked your bag please?

What the public do not know is majority of Malaysian doesn’t appreciate the security efforts executed by the security team. We were thrown with ‘curse’, some says it was our responsibility to take care of their confiscate food & drink, some stupid arrogantly said that it wasn’t mentioned at all that no outside food & drink is allowed and worst still some even blindly argued that there is no such thing/enforcement in the last previous rainforest festival. On the other hand, the foreigners are seemed to be very co-operative and happy with our services. They even compliment us on doing a great job of which is very motivating and encouraging to hear/accept.

dont tell me you cant read and understand the meaning of the signage that are placed just above your head while waiting for your security check turn

The truth is food & drinks are available for sale in SCV. Yes, it is quite pricey as compared to outside food but it is something to be expected, right? If it is out of your budget then don’t ever think of going to the RWMF. Period.

Do you know that the Rainforest World Music Festival is the one and only event in Malaysia that is granted with permit to serve alcohol?

Yes, you read it out and clear of which explain some of the crowd coming to the rainforest music festival on yearly basis to party instead of gaining or educating oneself of what is the objective of the RWMF.

What is sad to me is apart from getting oneself drunk; most of the local (I’m referring to Malaysian in general) likes to wear ‘as less cloth as possible’ unlike the foreigners wore more decent clothing. I noticed that they even come with so-called trend setter. Of which makes me think that the RWMF is also a good platform for others out there to advertise their products.

you see what i mean here?? wonder how many bottles of hair spray he used for that?

So, may I suggest to any interested parties out there sponsoring the MGK9 uniforms for the next year RWMF. 🙂

Do you know that throughout the 3 days of RWMF, we (the MGK9 team) only had 3-4 hours of sleep (especially me)?

It might sound hard and scary to some but in actual fact, the team works in 2 shifts (day & night shifts). The team is well fed by the organizer (terima kasih daun keladi for the hotel buffet style of breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper) but when one had to wake up as early as 7am for breakfast, had to reach SCV’s entrance by 9am (for the day shift), taking turn for lunch break, performing duty under the hot sun/rain. When the night shift team took over the task from the day shift team, they can go back to their room and rest but had to wake up again around 1 or 2am to attend post-mortem meetings.

One ‘sleeping beauty pattern’ will definitely change throughout the RWMF, I kid you not.

this is where we had our dinner & lunch thru out the 3 days at scv

some of the mgk9 staff having their packed dinner before off for duty

To conclude that, we have to be the first person to be present at SCV’s entrance and we are also the last one to leave SCV.

Do you know that the MGK9 canines are well trained working dogs?

The canines may look harmless whenever they beside their master and prior to the RWMF, I’ve witness few sessions of dog training done at the beach nearby to the hotel where we stayed. The canines will only received instructions from their master and their master are well trained dog handler. The MGK9 brought along 9 canines for the RWMF and are being placed at strategic location within the SCV area.

crawl over the rock please..

i did it and did you managed to get the shot coz the rock hurts my tummy

look im climbing a staircase leading to heaven door

i made it to the heaven door

Do you know that the MGK9 team based at Miri had to suffer a 16 hours of bus ride (to and fro) with the canines for the RWMF?

Oh yes, by the time our team mate from West Malaysia, Sabah, Singapore & the Philippines’ reached at their respective destination, we are still on the road. What a day but it is indeed a wonderful lifetime experience for me.

mrs eskimo in the making due to the 16hrs of bus ride
