The Chinese Lunar New Year is just round the corner. I bet all of those who are looking forward to celebrating the family reunion gathering (same goes to me) are busy preparing their family respective tradition reunion dishes ingredients. To those who doesn’t have the time to do so, fret not coz you can always opt for take-away or just dine in.

Last Friday, few of us from the Sarawak Bloggers Society were invited to Miri Marriot Resort & Spa Hotel on its latest Chinese New Year promotion dishes.

Poon Choi @ Basin Dish
Back in China, especially in Hong Kong, this is a common dish throughout China. According to tradition, Poon Choi was invented during the late Song Dynasty. As this is a large dish, the portion are suitable for a communal meal; served whenever there are celebration related to festival, wedding or other local events. Enjoying Poon Choi demonstrates equality as the rich and the poor can eat it together. The cuisine also symbolizes affluence and prosperity in the coming year.

Water King Prawn – just look at the size!

For the first time, this dish is introduced to Mirian. At Miri Marriot Resort & Spa Hotel, the Poon Choi consists of 18 types of premium ingredients such as abalone, dried scallops, dried oysters, water king prawns, roasted chicken, smoked duck, sea cucumber and fish maw (just to name a few). Each item is prepared separately then layered meticulously in the basin. The final product would be a stew like consistency. Usually, the most premium ingredients are placed on top while the low profile ingredients will be placed at the bottom to absorb the gravy from the meat on top. The Poon Choi will be warmed over an open fire just before serving.

This was my first time trying Poon Choi and I love it. The secret to this dish is the broth, not so much on the premium ingredients.

Yee Sang
In a Chinese New Year reunion gathering, tossing Yee Sang symbolizes good luck, prosperity, health and all things auspicious. This dish can be enjoyed dining in or to be taken away at the comfort of your home. For a whole portion of Yee Sang, the price is at RM88nett while RM50nett is for half portion. The yee sang dish is NOW available for booking until March 3rd.

Chinese New Year Gourmet Set
No time to prepare your reunion dinner, you may want to consider bringing the entire family to Miri Marriot Resort & Spa Hotel for its gourmet set. The set menu comes with a complimentary of bottle of wine, soft drinks and Chinese tea.

For the record, the gourmet set is available for lunch and dinner. Great bargain! The promotion is available from January 26th until March 3rd. Advance reservation is required!

New Chef in the House!
In conjunction of the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration, Miri Marriot Resort & Spa Hotel introduces its new Chinese Chef – Chef Ang Choo Cuin who hails from Sabah. He will be responsible for the development of the Chinese menu and the maintenance of the quality and standards of food preparation, as well as oversee the Chinese food production of the hotel’s extensive banqueting events with the assistance of the Executive Chef Len Ivan Osmund.

      Tbh, Miri just started engaging bloggers for their promotion and it apply only to selected hotels. Bloggers are still seen not a powerful marketing tool yet.
