The Journey to Caring Society

Remember the Enroute to Caring Society post?
It was my visit to PERYATIM Miri as part of my MoHE unit social community project.

What/Who is PERYATIM?
PERYATIM is also known as Lembaga Kebajikan Anak-anak Yatim Sarawak. It is a Non-Governmental Organisation body that offer a home for Muslim orphans and the orphanage home is based in Miri.

According to Hajjah Juliana, Director of PERYATIM Miri the orphanage home is the second centre in Sarawak (after Kuching) and PERYATIM Sibu is expected to officially open to public (only to Muslim orphan) sometime in July 2011. It is said that the orphanage home received its 90% funding from public donation and 10% from government grants and PERYATIM Miri spend at least RM50, 000 per month of expenditures.

Currently, PERYATIM Miri accommodated approximately 100 orphans who are from Miri and nearby division such as Limbang, Mukah, Bintulu, Sibu and Sarikei. They are from 7 years old to 17 years old and studied at various schools located in Miri such as Sekolah Kebangsaan Merbau, Sekolah Menengah Teknik, Sekolah Menengah Sains and Sekolah Menengah Agama. Only orphans whom their breadwinner died or both parent died with a family income of below than RM700 per month is eligible to be place in the orphanage home.We were also being informed that the orphans are doing quite well in their studies. In 2009, one of the orphan scored 9As in Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) and in 2010, there two orphan scored 8As in their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

During the tabling of Sixth Malaysia Plan, Vision 2020 was introduced by Malaysia former Prime Minister, Tun Mahatir Mohamad. The vision objective was to achieve self-sufficient industrialized nation by the year 2020, encompasses all aspects of life, from economic prosperity, social well being, educational world class, political stability as well as psychological balance. In Vision 2020, there are nine strategic challenges and one of it is establishing a caring society.

1Malaysia is an on-going political program initiated by Malaysia Prime Minister, Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Razak. 1Malaysia goal’s is to preserve and enhance the unity in diversity with the best hope that it will be the nation strength in the future and it is also in line with establishing caring society as stated in Vision 2020.

With the 1Malaysia platform, it is hope that Malaysian can freely share their opportunity, respect, friendship and understanding in all areas despite of the differences of ethnicity background.

Carried Out Activities
Apart from fostering relationship as in bonding with the orphans and the orphanage staff, we/I get to know better and have clearer picture on the orphanage home. It was really an exciting, fun yet an educational visit for all. I just hope that by having our presence as university student would inspire and motivate the orphans to be successful person in the future.

I realised that for the nation to achieve the Vision 2020, one must also have a strong caring society. When we care for others, everybody will have a better place to stay peacefully and harmony. With the experience gain from this visit, I look forward to organise another visit to other orphanage homes in Miri in the near future as a way of me to give back to the community in line with the national level campaign on caring society.

How about you?
