The Preliminary Round of 2009 RWMF Volunteer Selection

My alarm from my pda alerted me. It reminds me of my ‘meeting the volunteer session later in the evening. I quickly get myself ready (as I wouldn’t want to be late) but eventually, I was late. ;p

I caught up in the traffic jam from Pujut 7 roundabout to GK roundabout. Lucky, I did buzz Raymond earlier on my late arrival so I wasn’t in a rush to reach the meeting venue. ;p

I was lucky to have a space to park my car in front of Bulatan Cafe. Usually on Friday evening, you wouldn’t be able to get a space to park your car due to the ‘Pasar Malam’ activities at Saberkas Commercial Centre.

I bumped into my ex-classmate, ‘Adik’ who had been operating his stall at the pasar malam for the last 3 years. Business is doing quite well despite of the current recession and I’m happy for him.

It was a meet up session with a group of 18 people and the main purpose was to get to know each individual personality up, close and personal. It is required to ensure those selected people are really committed in delivering and executing the assigned tasks.

Some thinks it was an easy task as a volunteer but little do they know, by signing up as a volunteer with me is like signing a ‘death warrant’. So, I shared with them the interesting, fun and ‘juicy’ introduction on what to expect on the upcoming event. I can see they were grinning to their ears.

When it comes to the main course, I can see the changes on their faces. Because this is where they would get many forms of harassments’ (most of it are verbal harassment) to the extend where you can break down and cry on the spot (especially to the female volunteer). Not only that, you have to be physical fit as well as you’ll get to stand most of the time under the sun and rain throughout the working hours.

When it comes to the ‘desserts’ session, I can see they were smiling and grinning again. Because apart from transportation provided (for Miri volunteer team only), they get to have free meals, get to stay at a resort hotel together with the rainforest performers and organizers but also certain amount of allowances will be rewarded after the 3 days event ends.

All of them were asked to really think and consider of their decision as once commit, there’s no turning back. My only hope is to see those who had made up their mind can really deliver and meet my expectations.

As for now, I better get back and work on the volunteer final list.
